The Stories Behind the Notes

The concept of this concert is intriguing. We will be moving from some of the world’s best-loved stories and poems to the sounds of the music they have inspired. We are musically referencing Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the fables of Aesop (a slave and storyteller from ancient Greece), and Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, Les Misérables. The repertoire chosen is as follows: Francis McBeth, Of Sailors and Whales (Five Scenes from Melville); Johan de Meij, Symphony No. 1: Lord of the Rings; Scott Watson, Aesop’s Fables for concert band and narrator; and Claude Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, Les Misérables.
